On 26 March 2025, the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr Marcela Rios Tobar, held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama, H.E. Javier Martinez-Acha, to express the Institute’s appreciation to the Republic of Panama for hosting IDEA’s Regional Office, and for the ongoing support and engagement of the country as a valued Member States since 2018.

El 26 de marzo de 2025, la Directora Regional para América Latina y el Caribe, Dra. Marcela Ríos Tobar, sostuvo una reunión bilateral con el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Panamá, S.E. Javier Martínez-Acha, para expresar el agradecimiento del Instituto a la República de Panamá por albergar la Oficina Regional de IDEA, y por el continuo apoyo y compromiso del país como un valioso Estado Miembro desde 2018.

These are times in which the so-called affective polarization has become an integral component of the public discourse. The denial of the voice of the other in the public sphere, the political position as a polarizing divide, and the inability to identify minimum common ground appear to have become the prevailing norm of democracy.

A pesar de la ley de paridad, la elección de mujeres a la Asamblea Nacional de Panamá apenas alcanzó el 21.7% en 2024, manteniéndose por debajo del promedio de América Latina (35.8%) y en Centroamérica (30.8%).
