The Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organization based in Stockholm, Sweden. It works in 35 countries and its institutional mandate is to support democracy worldwide. With regard to its work in Peru, the following should be noted:

The increased frequency and severity of natural hazards in recent years presents challenges to political institutions worldwide. For democracies, emergencies such as wildfires can substantially affect an electoral management body’s (EMB) capacity to administer free and fair elections.

In this case study, two jurisdictions in Canada are examined—Alberta and the Northwest Territories—whose general elections were affected by wildfires in 2023. 

The National Forum on Women in Politics brought together diverse voices to explore how Temporary Special Measures (TSMs) can foster inclusive governance in Fiji.

In February 2025, International IDEA and the Electoral Tribunal (ET) of Panama hosted a Protecting Elections Workshop in Panama City. The event, being the third of its kind under the Canada funded Protecting Elections project, brought together key national stakeholders to discuss electoral risks, threats, and crises.

En febrero de 2025, International IDEA y el Tribunal Electoral (TE) de Panamá organizaron un Taller sobre Protección Electoral en la Ciudad de Panamá. Este evento, siendo el tercero de su tipo dentro del proyecto "Protegiendo las Elecciones" financiado por Canadá, reunió a actores clave a nivel nacional para discutir los riesgos, amenazas y crisis electorales.

This discussion paper is a result of the work performed at the Democracy in South Asia Outlook Forum in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 28–30 November 2024, convened by International IDEA and the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA). The forum brought together a multidisciplinary group of experts from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in partnership with the Gambia Press Union (GPU) and with support from the European Union (EU), from 4th to 5th February 2025, conducted a two-day capacity-building on media monitoring of ethical violations for GPU and Media Council.

El Instituto Internacional para la Democracia y la Asistencia Electoral (IDEA Internacional) presentó el proyecto Fortalecimiento de las Competencias Democráticas Legislativas en Panamá en el Foro avances y oportunidades para la apertura legislativa, organizado por ParlAmericas, la Fundación para la Libertad Ciudadana (capítulo panameño de Transparencia Internacional) y la Fundación Espacio Cívico. Teniendo a congresistas invitados de Chile, Paraguay y Guatemala, así como asambleístas panameños, se abordaron ejemplos concretos de herramientas para la apertura parlamentaria, con experiencias de dichos países.

Committed to the advancement and protection of democracy, the representatives from International IDEA’s 35 Member States gathered at the Swiss Mission to the European Union on 5 February 2025 to discuss a critical issue: how inclusion and human rights can support democratic resilience in an increasingly volatile world.

On 12-14 November 2024, the Secretary-General of International IDEA, Dr Kevin Casas-Zamora, alongside Sam van der Staak, Director for Europe; Jonathan Murphy, Head of the INTER PARES Programme; Yuliya Shypilova, Programme Manager for Elections and Parliamentary Strengthening; and Iryna Pushchyk, Programme Assistant; undertook a landmark mission to Ukraine.

El Instituto Internacional para la Democracia y la Asistencia Electoral (IDEA Internacional), junto al Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD), presentan: Gobernanza democrática, gobernanza efectiva y desigualdad en América Latina, un marco teórico que permite identificar los factores que inciden en la baja capacidad redistributiva de las democracias latinoamericanas.
