En el marco de su 30.º aniversario, IDEA Internacional organizó una serie de actividades en Estocolmo para reflexionar sobre los desafíos actuales de la democracia y fortalecer el compromiso global con su defensa. El evento reunió a líderes políticos, expertos electorales y representantes de la sociedad civil de todo el mundo.

In 2024, a record-breaking 1.6 billion people across 74 national elections in 62 countries cast ballots in the space of a single calendar year. This was the result of a convergence of electoral cycles in different countries, leading to the description of 2024 as a ‘super-cycle’ election year.

The Global Election Monitor (GEM) offers concise, insightful summaries of national elections, spotlighting risks to electoral integrity and practices for prevention and mitigation. 

Mexico has experienced a consistent rise in temperatures since 2015, with 2024—the year of general elections—recording the highest on record. Despite the numerous hazards associated with climate change and the immense
administrative challenges, the National Electoral Institute succeeded in installing 99.85 per cent of polling stations, with no significant incidents reported on election day, 2 June.

There is clear support for democracy in the Pacific Islands region, but also reasons to be concerned about its contemporary practice. The complexity of Pacific democracy is rarely captured in global datasets. This has significant consequences for the understanding of democratic practice in the Pacific and the completeness of the global understanding of democracy.
