Con el compromiso de fortalecer la democracia y avanzar en la igualdad de género,la iniciativa ATENEA conformada por el Instituto Internacional para la Democracia y Asistencia Electoral (IDEA Internacional), el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) y ONU Mujeres, con el apoyo de la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional al Desarrollo (AECID), organizaron el Diálogo Regional “Fortalecer la Democracia y la Igualdad de Género para la prosperidad y el bienestar de la región: Hacia la Actualización del Índice de Paridad Política de Atenea”.

The Africa and West Asia regional Office is pleased to announce the signing of a Host Country Agreement (HCA) between International IDEA and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Government of the Republic of South Africa on 20 June 2025.

The Constitution Building and Rule of Law Programme of International IDEA and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, Oxford University, organized a roundtable under the theme Resistance, Reversal, Resilience: Lessons from Abuse of Law to Attack Civic Space on 12 and 13 June 2025.

According to the Global State of Democracy, Guatemala is experiencing stagnation in the areas of rights and representation, as well as a slight decline in the rule of law and citizen participation. Despite this, there is also an active citizenry that rises in critical moments to defend democracy and the vote.

De acuerdo con el estado global de la democracia, Guatemala atraviesa un estancamiento en las dimensiones de derechos y representación, así como una leve disminución en el estado de derecho y la participación ciudadana. Sin embargo, también se observa una ciudadanía activa en momentos críticos en defensa de la democracia y el voto.

International IDEA, in collaboration with the African Union Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and with support from the European Union under the Strengthening Pan-African Capacities for Electoral Observation and Assistance (SPEC) project, held a two-day Expert Validation Meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 3–4 July 2025.

This report advocates for thorough protection of human rights in the digital age, emphasizing the strength of constitutional safeguards over ordinary legislation. As digital technologies increasingly influence civil and political rights, online as well as offline, robust constitutional frameworks are essential to address new challenges such as unwarranted surveillance, censorship and data monopolies.

Este informe presenta un análisis detallado del proceso electoral de Uruguay en 2024, destacando su alto desempeño democrático. Examina el contexto político, social y económico, la estructura de la competencia partidaria, el rol de los plebiscitos y los resultados de las elecciones. Además, identifica desafíos clave como la representación política de las mujeres y la supervisión del financiamiento político, ofreciendo perspectivas para mejorar la integridad y la representación electoral.

International IDEA is honored to have received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Certificate was awarded for International IDEA’s contribution to strengthening the institutional capacity of the Commission, particularly as it relates to emerging technologies, and to advancing the transparency of electoral processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In an effort to promote democracy and gender equality, IDEA International, the Electoral Tribunal's Office for Gender Equality, the Association of Women Parliamentarians and Former Parliamentarians of the Republic of Panama (APARLEXPA), and the National Forum of Women in Political Parties (FONAMUPP) organized the workshop-discussion “Women's Political Participation and Digital Violence.”

During the 2nd week of June, International IDEA convened a series of events to mark the institution’s 30th anniversary, including a Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity jointly organized with the Swedish Election Authority and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Durante la segunda semana de junio, IDEA Internacional convocó una serie de eventos para conmemorar el 30° aniversario de la institución, incluida una Conferencia de Estocolmo sobre Integridad Electoral organizada conjuntamente con la Autoridad Electoral Sueca y el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Suecia.

El Diálogo de Alto Nivel sobre “Reimaginando la Democracia en África: Experiencias Comparativas del Sur Global” se celebró los días 19 y 20 de junio de 2025 en Pretoria, Sudáfrica. Como resultado de este evento, los participantes acordaron compartir el Consenso de Pretoria, cuyos elementos clave se debatieron en cada sesión.
