The global pandemic has highlighted the resilience of our democratic institutions, the universal desire for fundamental freedoms, and the necessity of multilateralism.
Yet the crisis has also shed light on the ease with which restrictions can be imposed on democratic checks and balances, civic participation, and human rights, and it has exposed challenges for cooperation in times of need.

Malawi held fresh Presidential elections following a Constitutional Court order of the 3rd of February 2020 that nullified the Presidential election that had been held on the 21st of May 2019, which decision was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal on the 8th of May 2020. A new Commission was appointed on the 7th of June 2020, and conducted the fresh presidential election on the 23rd of June 2020.
The purpose of the webinar, organized by International IDEA Africa and West Asia Programme, is to create a virtual platform for dialogue and experience-sharing on how parliamentary democracy can be preserved and how parliaments can take the lead in ensuring oversight of the extended emergency powers of the Executive, and be the true reflection of citizens’ voices on matters pertaining to the handling of the pandemic in their countries.
