International IDEA and the Community of Democracies are holding a side event under the theme “SDG 16+ Lessons learned in implementation, partnerships and the way forward”. This discussion panel will take place on Monday, 15 June 2019, at 16:30, at the Uganda House in New York City, in the framework of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF).

The 2019 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) will review, among other issues, the implementation of SDG16 on peace, justice and accountable institutions. The integrity of electoral processes is a fundamental factor for democratic accountability.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) and International IDEA are organizing a conference to kick off the INTER PARES Parliaments in Partnership Programme, a new EU Global Project to Strengthen the Capacity of Parliaments.

The conference Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies: SDG 16 Implementation and the Path to Leaving No One Behind, co-organized by UN DESA and IDLO with the Government of Italy, was held in Rome on 27-29 May 2019, to contribute to the preparations for the July 2019 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

The SDG16 is particularly challenging for open data collection. Non-official data, as highlighted by SDG16 Data Initiative (SDG16 DI), independently address gaps in data availability, through innovative methodologies and can reduce capacity strain on NGOs through strategic partnerships. Critically, non-official data can provide accountability to governments, ensuring perceptions and needs of marginalized groups are accounted for.

A three-day workshop is organized to showcase the Youth Democracy Academy to 20 young men and women in Papua New Guinea.

The workshop aims to engage selected youth leaders into conversation on democracy-building, particularly in the areas of constitution building, elections, political parties and media in democracy, helping them understand their role by providing knowledge and skills necessary to participate in political processes.

Professional electoral administrators are key to delivering well-organized, credible and genuine elections. The electoral management bodies (EMBs) perform best when their leadership has thorough understanding of the mechanics, principles and good practices in electoral administration.

International IDEA and the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies, in collaboration with the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold the Inter-Regional Experts Meeting on “Democracy and Peacebuilding in the Framework of SDG 16+”, on Thursday, 20 June 2019, in Bogotá, Colombia.

In the context of the MoU between International IDEA and the Program for Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA), International IDEA will participate in the needs assessment meetings with political parties in Mauritius (25-30 May 2019) and Madagascar (30 May - 2 June 2019) as part of a baseline mapping for ‘’Policy and Organizational Support Programme’’, a Sida-funded political party strengthening initiative (2019-2020).

The 7th edition of the OECD’s Global Anti-Corruption & Integrity Forum entitled – Tech for Trust, will look at how blockchain, big data analytics, AI and other new technologies are transforming the way of working for governments, businesses and society.  

The Facility on Justice in Conflict and Transition provides short-term support and expert advice in the areas of transitional justice, constitution building and restoration of justice for the population. Through the rapid deployment of its experts to third countries, the Facility on Justice in Conflict and Transition (the Facility) renders strategic and technical advice, helps jump-start short-term projects, and facilitates the identification of opportunities for longer-term involvements.

International IDEA is conducting a meeting on “Global databases on election administration sustainability, research methodology and meeting user needs” in Stockholm during the period 13-14 March 2019.

As Myanmar is currently consolidating its democracy and transitioning towards a federal state, state and regional institutions will play an increasingly crucial role in terms of good governance, division of power, checks and balances, and resource sharing.

International IDEA and Gender Links are running an Electoral Risk Management (ERM) Workshop entitled “Violence against women in political and electoral processes” in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the period 15–17 January 2019.
