On 19-20 October 2017, International IDEA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Issues in Haiti, held an important forum that gathered women´s organizations and political parties to discuss the strategies and possible interventions to promote and strengthen the role of women in politics in the country.

One month after having voted the national budget, both houses of parliament have received stark criticisms from Haitians, both within the country and abroad. Haiti is facing a tense situation due to repeated strikes in public transportation sector and weekly demonstrations, often ending in violence scenes and breakages.
At present, Peru is discussing the political reform that has been demanded for more than a decade. Various topics that are expected to be reformed might have a very deep impact in the regional and municipal electoral process of 2018 in which more than 12,000 authorities will be elected nationwide. Hence, it is relevant to position this topic as part of the public agenda in order to ensure citizens’ participation in this process.

The number of women in politics and decision-making spaces has been increasing very slowly in Peru. In 2016, the country began a major electoral reform process that International IDEA has been supporting. The first reform proposal represents an important development as it includes parity and alternation in electoral lists. Continued efforts to embed and progress this debate within the Peruvian parliament are needed.
On 10 October 2017, the Government of Mexico, represented by the Ambassador of Mexico to Sweden, Agustín Gasca Pliego, joined International IDEA's Secretary-General Yves Leterme, and Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Daniel Zovatto, for the signing ceremony of the host-country agreement to establish a sub-regional office of International IDEA in Mexico City.
On 15 September, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Brazil organized a regional conference on ‘Democracy and Elections’ as part of International Day of Democracy celebrations. The conference was attended by electoral body representatives of MERCOSUR countries, International IDEA, the United Nations, the Organization of American States, Human Rights Watch and other prominent electoral experts.
On 2 October 2017, International IDEA celebrated a decade of work in Bolivia, satisfying the mission of supporting democratic processes and institutions. Its work focuses on four thematic areas: constitutional building; electoral processes; participation and political representation; democracy and development. It also works transversally on gender, diversity, conflict and security issues.

The National Workshop convoked by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal took place on 19 September 2017 in La Paz city, for the socialization of the results of the departmental days of deliberation around the contents of the Law of Political Organizations, which is located under construction, with the support of International IDEA with UN Women, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID)

The Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of International IDEA, Dr Daniel Zovatto, participated in the Conference on Electoral Integrity in Latin America, held in Mexico City on 14-15 August 2017. During his Mexico visit, he also facilitated in formalizing the bilateral electoral cooperation between Mexico and Paraguay through the signing of a collaboration agreement between the Supreme Electoral Court of Paraguay and the National Electoral Institute of Mexico.
International IDEA in Bolivia is helping youth organizations in the development of platforms that can display advocacy efforts in the drafting of public policies within the framework "Women's Leadership and the Strengthening of Regional Public Governance".

The regional office of International IDEA for Latin America and the Caribbean held two working meetings in Santiago, Chile in August to present its regional strategy and work plans (at regional, sub-regional and national levels) to the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) as well as to its Member Countries accredited to the Government of Chile.
The Superior Electoral Tribunal of Paraguay partners with International IDEA to organize workshops to explore the challenges and ways forward to enhance women’s political participation and promote their citizenship rights in the country.
