Luxembourg has selected gender and democracy as a thematic priority during its Chairship of International IDEA’s Council of Member States in 2024.

La discriminación y la representación desigual dentro de los sistemas electorales pueden perpetuar barreras sistémicas que obstaculizan la participación y el liderazgo de las mujeres en la política y, en última instancia, socavan la integridad de las elecciones. Al garantizar que las medidas para abordar los riesgos, amenazas y crisis electorales sean sensibles al género, podemos avanzar tanto en la integridad electoral como en el progreso social hacia la igualdad de género.

Ensuring electoral integrity is not only about protecting elections from negative occurrences, but also about upholding fundamental principles of gender equality. Discrimination and unequal representation within electoral systems can perpetuate systemic barriers that hinder women's participation and leadership in politics, ultimately undermining the integrity of elections. By ensuring that measures to deal with electoral risks, threats and crises are gender-sensitive, we can advance both electoral integrity and societal progress towards gender equality.

The third Summit for Democracy will take place from 18 to 20 March 2024 in Seoul, the Republic of Korea. International IDEA is contributing to the third Summit through its role as a Platform for Engagement with Civil Society, as an organizer of Summit activities, and as co-coordinator of the Global Democracy Coalition and the Partners for Democracy Day.

Durante la sesión, la Junta consideró su agenda para el año, participando en debates integrales sobre posibles prioridades programáticas y de gobernanza. International IDEA's Board of Advisers had its first meeting of the year on 8 February 2024. During the session, the Board considered its agenda for the year, engaging in comprehensive discussions on possible programmatic and governance priorities. The Board also decided on its leadership for the coming years. 

Online campaigning has been gaining prominence in Chile since the 2017 elections, featuring heavily especially during the five elections held after 2019. This case study highlights critical challenges related to online campaign finance, some of which are not unique to Chile.
