The European elections, held across the European Union from June 6 to June 9, 2024, drew millions of voters to the polls. During this pivotal democratic event, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) played a crucial role by supporting essential visits for Ukraine’s Central Election Commission (CEC) as part of the International Visitors’ Programmes.
Within the USAID “RADA: Next Generation” Program, International IDEA co-organized a closed online briefing for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the upcoming elections to the European Parliament and its impact on the EU political landscape.
On March 29, 2024, Kyiv hosted a momentous conference titled "The Role of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the Path to Full Membership of Ukraine in the European Union," organized by International IDEA in collaboration with NGO "Internews-Ukraine" and the Ukrainian Parliament’s Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the European Union. This conference became a pivotal platform for defining the strategic directions for the development of parliamentarism within the context of Ukraine's European integration. The European Commission adopted its Defence of Democracy Package on Tuesday, 12 December 2023. The package encompasses a directive, two recommendations and a communication aiming at shielding European Democracy from malign foreign actors and bolstering democratic resilience from within.
On Tuesday, the European Commission launched its long-awaited Defence of Democracy package. For months, public debate around the package has been absorbed by controversy over its Directive on interest representation by third countries, the centrepiece of which is a transparency register for donations from outside the EU.
On 1 December 2023, International IDEA’s Council of Member States, chaired by the Netherlands, unanimously approved a membership request from France. The country joins the intergovernmental organization as its 35th Member State. France’s membership comes with a strong message of support for the Institute’s work, including a foreseen core contribution of 500,000 EUR for 2024 to back the Institute’s operations and knowledge production.

The Dutch Chairship of International IDEA in 2023 culminated in the second bi-annual Council of Member States meeting and a set of side events, organized on 30 November and 1 December 2023 at the Institute’s headquarters in Stockholm and online. In its role as the Chair of the Institute, the Netherlands was supported by the Vice Chairs Ghana and Chile.
At the Council of Member States meeting convened on 1 December 2023 at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm, the Netherlands, represented by Ambassador Bengt van Loosdrecht, handed over the Chairship of International IDEA to Luxembourg, represented by Ambassador Henri Schumacher. The transition in the Institute’s leadership also saw the appointment of Norway as Vice Chair.
