Sweden marks 100 years of universal suffrage and celebrates democracy this year. At the same time, democracy is in decline in many parts of the world, with escalating human rights violations and ongoing threats and violence against activists. These challenges to democracy have been further aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The participants will discuss the current issues affecting democracy in Sweden and worldwide, answering some key questions such as: How bleak is the current state of democracy in the world? How can we reverse the negative trends, and what can we learn from how democracy has developed in Sweden? What long-term implications will the pandemic have for global democracy?
