The Africa and West Asia regional Office is pleased to announce the signing of a Host Country Agreement (HCA) between International IDEA and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Government of the Republic of South Africa on 20 June 2025.

The High-Level Dialogue on “Re-imagining Democracy in Africa: Comparative Experiences from the Global South" was held on 19–20 June 2025 in Pretoria, South Africa. Preamble
On 15 May 2025, International IDEA co-hosted its first-ever Protecting Elections: Addressing Gender-Based Discrimination and Violence in Electoral Processes workshop in Mauritius. The event was organized in collaboration with Le Réseau des compétences électorales francophones (RECEF) and the Office of the Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius (OEC).
From 13 to 14 May 2025, International IDEA, in collaboration with Le Réseau des compétences électorales francophones (RECEF) and the Office of the Electoral Commissioner (OEC) of Mauritius, organized a two-day Protecting Elections workshop. Held in conjunction with RECEF’s General Assembly and hosted by OEC Mauritius, this was the first Protecting Elections Workshop conducted in French and tailored for an electoral network audience.
The National Assembly of The Gambia officially launched its 5-Year Strategic Plan (2025–2029) on 16 May 2025 at a high-level ceremony held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre.
Since the Stockholm Founding Conference in 1995, International IDEA has worked to deliver policy-relevant knowledge, capacity development, advocacy and dialogue facilitation to advance and protect sustainable democracy globally.
In 2023, International IDEA and the Australian Election Commission partnered to host a series of virtual seminars aimed at bringing together electoral practitioners from around the world to discuss topics relating to electoral integrity. These seminars were designed to stimulate discussion and exchanges on key themes underpinning public trust in elections, such as operational integrity, security of the process and the information environment around elections.
Funded by the European Union, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has been implementing a democracy strengthening project in Sierra Leone since November 2022.
Speakers of transitional parliaments from Central and West Africa gathered in Libreville to re-enforce democratic processes as transition ends.
On 3-4 May 2025, the African Union Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department (AUPAPS) convened a roundtable in Nairobi to explore the role of media in complement democratization efforts in Africa. The roundtable was organised in collaboration with International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA). The event doubled as a commemoration of World Press Freedom Day. The event gathered journalists, media institutions, civil society actors, experts from EISA and AU agencies to strengthen the integration of democratic values into African societies, especially among youth.

From April 9 –12, 2025, Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted a critical reflection and technical meeting focusing on the 2024 elections and the emerging trends in electoral processes in Africa. Organized by the African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security (AUC PAPS) in collaboration with the RECs and Africa and West Asia Electoral Process Programme of International IDEA, the event convened key electoral stakeholders to assess the state of elections across the continent and prepare for upcoming electoral cycles.
