Democracy is pivotal in the pursuit for peace. The global conflict-prevention agenda that the UN Secretary-General seems committed to revitalizing is largely based on this assumption.

A delegation of 15 young Zimbabwean leaders visited International IDEA’s Stockholm headquarters on 20 August to discuss the state of Zimbabwean democracy, the recent elections and the prospects for Zimbabwe’s youth in the future.

To further discuss the establishment of a gender electoral network in the Arab region, the Organization of Arab Electoral Management Bodies (Arab EMBs), the UNDP and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) agreed last July to hold a meeting in August 2018.

Political rights of refugees are an endurance test for the fabric of democracy. The recent migration waves resulting from civil wars have brought the debate on this topic back on the public agenda. Governments, political parties and other actors throw their weight behind various public policies which are geared towards regulating illegal migration.

As part of International IDEA’s engagement to strengthen the capacity of electoral actors and institutions, the Africa and West Asia programme organized the fifth New Commissioners’ Orientation (NCO) for newly appointed electoral commissioners and senior election administrators for the period 17-20 April 2018 in Lilongwe, Malawi.

On 30 April to 2 May 2018, International IDEA hosted a dialogue session on Yemen’s constitution. The dialogue session’s agenda focused on the type of governance arrangements that could be used to govern Yemen after a peace agreement enters into force.  Amongst other things, participants discussed possible financial arrangements, and dispute-resolution mechanisms that could be used to govern the country in the interim period.

This report summarizes the Regional Dialogue held in Cotonou, Benin, from 10 to 12 November 2017 on the theme: ‘Three  decades of democratic transition in Africa: What are the dividends for citizens?’.
