Climate action since the 2015 Paris Agreement shows that while solutions are available, neither ambition nor implementation are progressing at the required pace. Democratic institutions must adapt not only to protect societies and the environment, but also since climate change poses an existential risk to democracy.

Hosted by Human Rights Watch, this panel will explore how economic inequality fuels social unrest and the weakening of democratic institutions. Featuring former heads of state and civil society leaders, this event aims to identify actionable strategies to address economic injustices while promoting democratic governance.

Within the framework of their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the Electoral Commissions’ Forum of SADC Countries (ECF SADC) is collaborating with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) to organize the 12th New Commissioners’ Orientation (NCO) Programme, that will be hosted by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), in Lusaka, Zambia from August 27-29, 2024.

International IDEA will host a Regional Workshop on Electoral Risk Management for Election Management Bodies (EMBs) on August 26-27, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Africa and West Asia Programme of International IDEA is collaborating with the UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa and the African Union Commission to organize a strategic reflection meeting of women chairpersons of electoral management bodies (EMBs) in Africa on 5-6 August 2024, in Accra, Ghana. This meeting will be hosted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana and the Association of African Electoral Authorities. The meeting which is the first gathering of its kind aims to set the framework for the establishment of an African women leadership network in electoral management.

This strategic reflection meeting will bring together current women chairpersons of EMBs from nine African countries: Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The WPP barometer is a resource that demonstrates the status of Women's Political Participation in Africa. It aims to provide evidence, especially to legislators and policy makers to advocate and strengthen women's political participation and leadership. The webinar will take place on 10 July 2024 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (CEST).

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) are implementing a 36-month project, titled – ‘Strengthening Pan-African Capacities for Electoral Observation and Assistance’ (SPEC), from January 2024 to December 2026.

International IDEA is launching on 11 April the Perceptions of Democracy Survey (PODS), aimed at identifying how people understand and assess a range of attributes of democracy in their country contexts. Its unique value-add is a comparison of expert assessments and public evaluations of democracy and a comparison of representative samples and marginalized groups.

The webinar will host two prominent Sudanese constitutional experts and moderated by International IDEA's Associate Programme Officer Amel El Mejri.

International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy Report is a flagship publication that provides evidence-based, balanced analysis and data on the state and quality of democracy for 173 countries across the world. It aims to contribute to the public debate on democracy and inform policy interventions to strengthen democracy.

Under the theme "Transforming Political Campaigns: How AI and Big Data Amplify Voter Engagement and Shape Political Campaigns in Africa" International IDEA Political Participation and Representation Programme is sponsoring the International Political Campaigns Expo which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from the 24 to the 26 January 2024. 

The 10th Session of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) Conference of the State Parties (COSP) will be held in Atlanta, USA on 11-15 December 2023. The conference gathers global leaders to advance the implementation of the Convention and set a common vision for the future anti-corruption work.

To commemorate the 16 Days of Activism 2023, RoLAC and UNDP are organising a Summit to sensitise key members of Parliament to the critical role they play in overseeing the implementation of the VAPP Act and fulfilling their role as budgetary decision-makers who can ensure that allocated resources match the legislative priorities and national policies on violence against persons.
