Poland’s democracy has undergone severe challenges over the past decade. The erosion of checks and balances and the weakening of judicial independence became a source of political contestation at home and abroad. The 2023 election, however, brought in a new government committed to restoring Poland’s democratic standards and adherence to the rule of law.

This lecture marks the first event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy. This new initiative is a cooperation between renowned Stockholm-based institutions with a particular focus on climate change and democracy from different perspectives. It aims to inform, inspire, and engage experts and the general public alike by providing high-profile public lectures on the interlinkages between climate change and democracy followed by debate.

The International IDEA Annual Review of Constitution-Building examines global constitutional reform efforts around the world. The 2024 review covers cases from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities facing democratic constitutionalism today.

Indigenous Peoples are recognized in United Nations documentation as distinct communities with ancestral ties to specific territories, possessing unique ethnic identities, cultural traditions, social structures, traditional governance practices, and legal systems. As emphasized by the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), achieving genuine empowerment, equality, and secure access to land and natural resources for Indigenous Peoples requires robust protection of their political rights within national legal frameworks and governance systems.

During the 2nd week of June, International IDEA convened a series of events to mark the institution’s 30th anniversary, including a Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity jointly organized with the Swedish Election Authority and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On 9-12 June 2025, International IDEA’s 30th anniversary jubilee brought Member States of the Institute’s Council, Members of its Board of Advisers, electoral agencies and partner organizations to celebrate three decades of democracy support and to chart a path forward.

In June 2025, International IDEA marked three decades of advancing democracy with a series of landmark events across the globe. From Stockholm to Pretoria, we convened global leaders, electoral experts and prominent voices to address democracy’s most pressing challenges and forge a path forward.

This report delivers a comprehensive review of out-of-country campaign regulations across all 27 EU Member States. It synthesises legislative analyses, international standards and interviews to map rules on campaign events, media and public gatherings beyond national borders.

This is the third of a podcast series featuring LEGITIMULT, its findings and tools for addressing and solving future crises. This episode builds “Lessons from Covid-19 – Journalism in a Post-Pandemic Future” media workshop (more details below), and delves into the topic of crisis reporting.

Under the LEGITIMULT project, International IDEA hosted the ‘Lessons from Covid-19 Journalism in a Post-Pandemic Future’ media workshop at its headquarters in Stockholm. The workshop focused on key lessons and challenges from the pandemic and explored strategies for ethical, effective, and impactful reporting during crises. LEGITIMULT assesses the impact of the measures taken during the Covid-19 crisis by various international, national and subnational governments on multilevel institutions and intergovernmental relations. The insights from the media workshop will contribute to LEGITIMULT’s research, which seeks to develop a model for legitimate crisis governance.

The promise of participation and how collective decision-making can get us to more effective climate policies was the topic of the third event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy, which took place on 12 November 2024 at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm, with Greta Ríos.

It is with great sadness that the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has received the news that our founding Secretary-General, Bengt Säve-Söderbergh, passed away on Thursday, 5 September. His dedication to the promotion of democracy was unwavering, his passion inspiring to all, and his vision—now reality—will be a global legacy. 

Marcela Ríos, International IDEA's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), met with representatives of the Swedish Parliament's Committee on Constitutional Affairs, who officially visited Chile.
